Gratitude walks were first introduced to me in The Vein of Gold: A Journey to Your Creative Heart, by Julia Cameron. This book was one of the first ones I read on my path to re-discovering my creativity.

Along with morning pages and an artist’s date,  Ms. Cameron recommends daily walking for 20 minutes. It’s kind of a meditative practice. She says “Walking with our soles is really walking with our souls.”

The morning pages allows us to brain dump and also notice what issues keep surfacing in order to address them. The artist’s date fills you soul with images and sound. And the daily walking grounds you. It gets you into nature and into your body. The combination of these 3 acts allows you to tap into your ‘vein of gold’. That beautiful, passionate part of yourself that you may or may not be aware of.

Along with the daily walking, she recommends a weekly gratitude walk. During your daily walk, you use this time to exercise your thankfulness. You should mentally list and vocalize your gratitude for everything in your life you enjoy.

You may be surprised at how difficult this can be, at first. But like most things, the more you do it, the better you become.

And for you fans of the Law of Attraction… gratitude is a key component. What a beautiful way to increase the amount of thankfulness you share in your life. Just go for a walk!

I went out for a gratitude walk yesterday and it was really a transformational experience. I found making the gratitude list fairly easy. But I didn’t expect to be overcome with emotion. By the time I was finished my walk, I was in tears. Tears for the blessings in my life.

I am so blessed and grateful for my gratitude walk.

I love to walk and enjoy nature. I find it very therapeutic and calming. The beauty of the scenery just puts me at ease and I feel grateful everytime I get to see and admire the wonders of life around me. So I guess I can call it my gratitude walk too :-) Great post, as usual, Debbie.

I really enjoy being in nature. It fills my soul. Sometimes I like to carry my camera with me so I can express my creativity as well.

I had never heard of this Debbie. What a wonderful idea! A gratitude walk. I believe getting out of our regular routine and especially being in contact with nature will bring out many things and inspire us in ways that couldn’t happen without it.
Thank you so much for writing about this. I will try to incorporate gratitude walks into my life now.
Blessings,
Eren

Eren, it’s such a wonderful way to accomplish many things at one time. It recharges the soul, decreases stress, and is great for problem solving. Keep me updated!

What a great post. I am now thinking I need to take that walk. It really can put things into prospective. I also did a post on law of attraction which I am trying hard to do. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Karla, it’s a great way to super-charge the law of attraction. Another great tool is a vision board. Check out Make a Collage Vision Board!

I like that idea. A gratitude walk. I see that Cameron had a 12-week program aimed at recovering one’s creativity. As someone who actually finds art in technical things I can appreciate creativity. I find there is art in simplicity and like to architecturally design software that is simple and get many ideas while taking a simple stroll.

OOhhh I love software. As someone who used to be completely left brained, I can appreciate your love of technical things. Loved your post on using emotion to draw people in. Thanks for stopping by.

That sounds like a wonderful way to get the brain juices flowing. Plus a walk will be good for the body too, so double the benefits!

You know, it’s just a great thing all around. It’s a great problem solver, even when I’m not thinking about the problem. The answers just seem to come.

Walking and being in nature and being in touch with our bodies is so rejuvenating! And gratitude walks are like icing on a cake, for me. Enjoy your walk!

Whenever I take a walk I love to look at my natural surroundings. It reminds me that there is more to life than me and my small problems. I try to think of three things everyday that I can be thanful for. It helps me put my life in perspective.

I journal my gratitude everyday. By adding images, it makes my gratitude feel stronger. And I really enjoy that.

Hi Debbie,
I am new to your site, and I have to say, I love it.
I take a gratitude walk everyday and when I can’t walk I find a quite place to be by myself. I wake up every morning and start the day with what I am grateful for.

Hi Julianne,
Sometimes my gratitude walk is from the bedroom to the bathroom. And sometimes my walk is when I’m driving in the car. Starting the day with gratitude just sets the right tone for the day, don’t you think?

Hi Debbie,
You are so right!!
I feel the more grateful you are for the things you have now, the more things you get.
And when walking in gratitude you automatically walk with a spring in your step.
Have a gratitude of a day.
Julianne

Is there any one place you prefer to walk than another? I pretty much walk EVERYWHERE, but no better place than is on the coast in Oregon at my mom’s house. It makes me appreciate the little stuff just a bit more

Hi Ann,

I love to walk on the beach. It’s hard not to be grateful surrounded by such beauty. My husband has been to Oregon and raves about all the beauty.

One Love,
Debbie
