Limiting Beliefs

Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs… those rascally, counter productive beliefs hiding in our sub-conscious. When I first became aware of limiting beliefs, I was shocked. Me? Getting in the way of my own success? No way!

Then I read Joe Vitale’s Attractor Factor. He had a chapter for discovering your limiting beliefs. And it started off with a list of questions like:

  • What TV shows did you watch as a kid?
  • How were the rich people portrayed in those shows?

Oh my gosh! I was shocked. All those rich actors were portrayed negatively. I instantly made the connection between those shows and my views on having money. Now the trick was to release those views.

Here are 7 methods for releasing your limiting beliefs.

Affirmations

I love the book by Louise L. Hays called Experience Your Good Now. It’s kind of like a workbook for affirmations. I put different affirmations in different places around my home and office.

I have some taped to my computer monitor, my bathroom mirror, the back of my bathroom door, on my nightstand, and my car dashboard. (obviously, I read them before I drive)

Visualizations

When you visualize, you should see the results you are manifesting. I like to write mine out, in the present tense, as if I already have what I want. Here’s a secret… make sure you use all your senses in your visualization. What do you see, hear, feel (both physically and emotionally), smell and taste.

Our senses are the way we experience the world. So activating them in your visualization super charges it.

Shift the Negative Self Talk

When I first started using The Secret, my negative self talk freaked me out. Luckily I found an easy trick. I used an affirmation to become aware of my self talk. “It’s easy for me to notice when I’m speaking negatively to myself. It’s easy for me to shift my thoughts to what I do want.” That affirmation worked instantly.

I became aware when I was using negative language to talk to myself. And when ever I noticed that, I simple stated what I did want. (out loud if I could) “Oh, I might not be able to pay the cable bill this month.” Turns into “I want to pay the cable bill this month and every month. I always have the money to pay the cable bill and all other bills.”

Meditation

As meditation calms the mind, it also calms the spirit. I’m especially fond of binaural beat meditations. Different frequencies  are played in each ear and the brain averages them out and vibrates at a frequency between the two.

It sounds complicated, but it’s really easy. You just listen. The side effect is automatically arriving in a meditative state and a release of limiting beliefs.

I use the Holosync program and absolutely love it.

Ask the Subconscious for Help

If I am particularly stuck on something. Like I’m trying to manifest something and it is not showing up, I’ll ask my sub-conscious for help.

Right before going to sleep, I ask my subconscious to reveal to me my limiting belief. Now sometimes I get really weird dreams as a result. I know the message is in there, but don’t understand. So I ask my subconscious to be more specific.

It may take a couple days of persistence, but I always get an answer.

My Favorite – Make a Piece of Art

This should only take about 5 or 10 minutes. I’m not talking a Rembrandt here. I’m talking about taking some crayons or some colored pencils or markers. Set the intention for the art to reveal your limiting belief. And begin.

Try not to think too much or edit what you are drawing. When you finish, flip the paper over and finish the sentence, “I am…” like you are the art speaking. I guarantee you’ll discover a limiting belief. And by discovering it, you can now release it.

So get to work on those limiting beliefs. And before you know it, you’ll be manifesting everything your heart desires.

I came in from Sat’s Sounds Off link up-very neat post! I do agree with so much of what you said. In our church we say ‘get your foot off the hose’ referring to ourselves being our biggest obstacle. Very cool!

Debbie,
I am so excited that I found this website. I read Joe Vitale and others from the Secret, use Holosync and do affirmations and visualizations too! I am also a mom. It was just really cool to find someone who is so in sync! Do you use EFT? I am an EFT coach and it’s also a really powerful way to release limiting beliefs.
Thanks for sharing.

Oh my gosh Rebecca… I think we’re twins. I just got goosebumps! Twice! I started to add the EFT to the post but it was getting too long. So I am going to write a second post on just that.

Man I love your site. You remind me of things I need to do that I have been putting off. Many of the things you mentioned I need to change. My biggest is negative self talk. That is huge for me. I must get that book! Thanks again.

OMG, you have no idea how many times I’ve watched The Secret and read The Attractor Factor. It was actually what started me this journey. So true, being aware of how you talk to yourself and how you talk to others really helps shift your mind from being negative to positive. And training my kids to always state what they want instead of what they don’t want reminds me to do the same as well. Very powerful.

I’m struggling with meditation. It’s hard for me to hold on to that state of being clear. Most of the time I fall asleep. Maybe it’s time for me to look into Holosync. How do you like it?

Wow girl! You just described what I do in my daily life! I have never read the secret but I always practice positive thinking. I’m constantly soothing any resistant thoughts with gentle words. All of the things that you have said really do work and make a huge difference in the “joy” factor. Love it!

Good for you. I envy people who do it naturally. Luckily I’m a good learner. Shifting those resistant thoughts is a biggie. Thanks for the comment.

Hey Debbie-
I actually kind of stumbled across or “discovered” that I needed to change my internal dialogue intuitively when I was overcoming extreme grief. I started to notice that by not allowing myself to think in a negative thinking pattern I was able to have a lot less stress and a lot more joy in my daily life. Now it has become a constant practice.
When other people start to think negatively around me .. I show them by mirroring what they just said and express a better way to think about that circumstance. If I don’t do this, their negativity will actually “rub off” on me.
I just wanted to say that this didn’t come naturally.. it was “birthed” so to speak from really difficult circumstances in my life.
Blessings,
Eren

I absolutely love Holosync. Bill Harris definitely over-delivers on the value he provides. I have gotten such great info from him and his site.

And the beauty of binaural beats is your brain vibrates at the meditation frequency just by listening. So whether you are thinking or not, you are in the meditative state.

Mistaken beliefs are what I call limiting beliefs that keeps us from achieving our goals. These beliefs came from somewhere; it’s our perception of what people in our past who didn’t believe in themselves projected on us – If they didn’t believe in themselves how can we expect them to believe in us. We may even have taken their positive intentions the wrong way. Our negative beliefs fueled our negative self-talk. Once someone believes anything negative others say or do to define them then that makes the other person more important than us and often these thoughts become incongruent to the positive beliefs we once had. Then, the work and the shift begins when you recognize your irrational beliefs that limit your success and growth- you can STOP the negative self-talk with daily affirmations. It really works and is simple; these affirmations can be so uplifting and empowering. Such as, I believe in myself, I’m okay with the ups and downs of life, I’m moving in a positive direction, Being imperfect is perfect, etc. Anything negative can be turned around to positive. Focus on the positive and if you think you can, you can!! Your perception and then your feelings will become more positive when you mindfully change your negative thoughts to positive thoughts.

Hi Marilyn, thanks for commenting. I agree about where our limiting beliefs come from and the benefits of affirmations. It’s a wonderful journey of discovery to realize you are not stuck where you are.

They can really hold you back. If I’m aware of them, but haven’t released them yet, I just feel the fear and do it anyway. But it sure is nice letting them go.

This is my second post to the site. This is great stuff. I believe very strongly in overcoming limiting beliefs. You’re right. When you first start to take notice it can be a humbling experience to realize how much your thoughts are negatively framed.

One of my favorite techniques for visualization is creating my own personal ‘mind movie’ (video with pictures, music and positive, present-tense affirmations that reminds you of what WILL be when you reach your goal). When I watch this inspirational movie twice a day, it really gets me pumped up and helps me not forget my goals.

Hi Steve,

Glad you’re back! I love using mind movies. They get me excited too. Believe it or not, I like to watch mine while dancing around. I find it really juices me up!

Very inspiring post! I too have beliefs similar to what you’ve mentioned, but I tend to think of them in a more spiritual light (for example rather than affirmations, I simply pray, and meditation is of great use too!)

Another way to get rid of these beliefs is to change your perception of the situation.. a good way to do that is by taking your vision off of the present and try to place your vision towards a positive future. Great post!

Debbie,

Browsing around your site I find many things of interest but this one caught my eye in particular. Funny how we are influenced and what sticks in our subconscious mind. I hadn’t really thought about meditation and art as ways to gain relief. That whole thought of well rounding yourself…. I may have to add that to the arsensal.

thanks,

I think a lot of people get hung up on the word ‘art’. But we all have these internal images that can provide insight and relief to some of the challenges we face. Thanks for wandering around and glad you found something helpful!

Thank you so much for spreading the word! You’ve got some really interesting ideas.

For many years, my life was like a prison. I’d constantly hit glass walls and couldn’t understand what was holding me back.

Now my eyes are opened, and while I still have a lot of work to do, everything looks so different. There are so many people though who are still trapped and don’t know why. It’s sad to watch them struggle.

There’s a lot of work ahead…
